When Two Books Become Part of Your Self-Care Journey

When Two Books Become Part of Your Self-Care Journey

Why The Secretive Wife and Dear Wife Are Both My August Books of the Month

For me, reading has never been only about escaping into a good story. Books have become an important part of how I care for myself. They give me a place to rest when life feels too loud, help me reconnect with my emotions, and remind me that healing does not have to be neat or linear.

That is why I could not choose only one Book of the Month for August 2026.

Both The Secretive Wife and Dear Wife by Jennifer Peel met me in meaningful ways during this season of my self-care journey. Each story gave me something different, but both reminded me that people are allowed to be complicated, imperfect, uncertain, and still worthy of love. So, for the first time, I am honoring them together as my Double Books of the Month.

Reading as a Soft Place to Land

Some days, self-care looks like making the appointment, setting a boundary, cleaning the room, or preparing a nourishing meal. Other days, it looks like getting comfortable, opening a book, and allowing myself to disappear into someone else’s world for a little while.

Jennifer Peel’s books have become that kind of soft place for me.

Her stories allow me to step away from the pressure to have everything figured out. I can laugh, feel, hope, and become completely invested in characters whose lives are just as messy and emotionally complicated as real life can be.

Reading her work reminds me that rest does not always mean doing nothing. Sometimes rest means choosing an experience that brings comfort, joy, and emotional release.

The Secretive Wife and Dear Wife both gave me that experience this month. They helped me slow down and make space for myself—not as a reward for finishing everything on my list, but because I deserve moments that belong only to me.

Finding Comfort in Imperfect Stories

One of the most healing things about reading emotionally layered stories is seeing characters struggle without reducing them to their worst decisions. The people in these books are imperfect. Their relationships are complicated. Their emotions are not always convenient, and their paths forward are not always obvious.

That messiness is part of what made both books so meaningful to me.

My own self-care journey has required me to release the belief that I must become a perfectly healed version of myself before I can experience peace, joy, love, or rest. Healing is not a straight line. Some days I feel rooted and confident; other days I feel tired, uncertain, or overwhelmed.

Both versions of me deserve care.

These stories reminded me that growth can happen in the middle of the mess. We can make mistakes and choose differently. We can carry old wounds and still open ourselves to something new. We can be works in progress and remain worthy of tenderness.

Books That Help Me Feel Instead of Perform

Life often asks us to keep moving, remain productive, and show up for everyone else—even when we are emotionally exhausted. Reading creates a space where I do not have to perform. I do not have to solve anyone’s problem or explain what I need. I can simply be present with the story and with myself.

That emotional freedom is self-care.

While reading The Secretive Wife and Dear Wife, I could experience a full range of emotions without needing to rush through them. I could laugh at the humor, sit with the difficult moments, become frustrated with the characters, root for their healing, and celebrate the love they found along the way.

Sometimes a book gives us the emotional release we did not realize we needed. These books reminded me that feeling deeply is not something I need to apologize for. My softness is not a weakness. It is part of who I am, and it deserves to be protected and nurtured.

A Full-Circle Moment in My Reading Journey

Choosing these two books also created a beautiful full-circle moment: The Sidelined Wife was my Book of the Month for August 2025.

One year later, I am once again spending August with Jennifer Peel and the More Than a Wife series—but I am not exactly the same reader I was last year. I have grown, rested, struggled, reflected, and become even more intentional about creating a life rooted in self-care, self-love, peace, rest, and joy.

Returning to this series feels like visiting a familiar place while recognizing how much has changed within me. That is one of the gifts of reading. Books do not only tell us stories; they become markers of our own seasons. They help us remember who we were when we first opened them and recognize who we are becoming when we return.

The Sidelined Wife will always hold a special place in my reading journey. Now, The Secretive Wife and Dear Wife have joined it—not simply because I loved them, but because of how they supported me during this particular chapter of my life.

Giving Myself Permission to Choose Both

At first, I wondered whether I needed to select one book as the “real” Book of the Month. But self-care is also about releasing unnecessary rules and listening to what feels true.

The truth is that both books mattered to me.

Choosing both is a small but meaningful act of abundance. I do not have to minimize one joy to validate another. I do not have to force every experience into a ranking. I am allowed to celebrate everything that nourished me.

There will be months when one book clearly owns my heart. August 2026 is not one of them. This month belongs to two stories that gave me comfort, emotional release, reflection, and joy.

📚 Dear Wife by Jennifer Peel

With a special full-circle mention of The Sidelined Wife, my August 2025 Book of the Month.

These books reminded me that reading is not something I have to earn after all the “important” work is finished. Reading is part of the important work. It helps me rest. It helps me feel. It helps me return to myself.

And sometimes, the most loving thing I can do for myself is curl up with a book that feels like a safe place to land.

Have you ever read a book that became part of your self-care journey? What story gave you exactly what you needed during a difficult or transformative season?

Happy reading—and remember, reading is self-care.
