After choosing The Sidelined Wife as my August 2025 Book of the Month, I was excited to return to Jennifer Peel’s More Than a Wife series. Once again, my emotional-support author gave me a story filled with love, laughter, complicated family dynamics, and the kind of emotional healing that stays with me long after the final page.
The Secretive Wife follows Delanie, a bestselling author who has built her career behind a secret identity. Although she has created a beautiful life with her husband, Peter, she is still carrying the pain of her past and a deep fear of abandonment. Delanie has spent so much of her life protecting herself that she struggles to believe she can be fully seen—secrets, insecurities, scars and all—and still be completely loved.
I loved how this story explored the difference between being loved and truly allowing yourself to receive that love. Delanie’s choices were sometimes frustrating, but they were also understandable. Her secrets weren’t rooted in cruelty; they came from fear, trauma, and years of believing that love could disappear without warning. Her emotional journey reminded me that healing requires vulnerability and that sometimes the walls we build to protect ourselves can also keep out the people who genuinely want to love us.
And Peter? He was everything I wanted in a book husband. He was patient, protective, hardworking, supportive, and deeply devoted to Delanie. He wasn’t perfect, and their marriage wasn’t perfect, but his love for her felt steady and sincere. I appreciated that this wasn’t a story about two people falling in love for the first time. It was about a married couple learning how to choose honesty, vulnerability, healing, and each other when the truth threatens the life they have built together.
Jennifer Peel beautifully balances humor and romance with deeper themes of abandonment, trust, family, identity, and emotional healing. Delanie and Peter’s marriage felt tender, messy, and real. Their story showed that being someone’s wife does not mean losing yourself—and that genuine love makes room for every part of who you are.
The Secretive Wife was emotional, heartfelt, entertaining, and beautifully messy. It was a wonderful continuation of the More Than a Wife series and another reminder of why Jennifer Peel remains one of my favorite authors. This was an easy five-star read about being brave enough to tell the truth, trusting that you are worthy of unconditional love, and finally allowing yourself to be fully seen.
