Naima Simone delivers a dark, intoxicating romance that feels like a twisted fairy tale where the castle is a criminal empire, the prince is morally gray, and Cinderella decides she's done waiting to be rescued.
What captivated me most was Ember herself. She is fierce, intelligent, and refuses to allow the people who spent years trying to break her determine the woman she becomes. Her journey isn't just about surviving unimaginable betrayal—it's about reclaiming her voice, her agency, and her future while standing in the same rooms as the people responsible for so much of her pain. Watching her heal without losing her fire made her one of my favorite heroines of the year.
Her greatest battle, however, isn't against the empire—it's against her own heart.
For years, Asad represented everything she hated. In her eyes, he was the loyal enforcer for the woman who destroyed her childhood, making the idea of loving him feel like the ultimate betrayal of herself. That emotional conflict gave every moment between them incredible depth because trust wasn't freely given—it had to be earned.
And then there's Asad.
Beneath the ruthless exterior is a man carrying the impossible weight of protecting the woman he loves while ruling an empire filled with people who would rather see her dead. Every decision he makes is a balancing act between power and devotion, and discovering the truth behind his choices completely changed the way I saw him. His love isn't loud because of grand declarations—it's revealed through sacrifice, protection, and the quiet ways he's been fighting for Ember all along.
Naima Simone masterfully weaves together danger, passion, heartbreak, and healing into a romance that never loses sight of its emotional core. The chemistry between Ember and Asad is electric from beginning to end, and when their walls finally come down, the intimacy is every bit as emotional as it is scorching.
I also loved seeing BLACK LOVE centered in a dark mafia romance. Their story is messy, complicated, passionate, and deeply human, proving that love can bloom even in the darkest places.
Ember captured everything I love about dark romance—the tension, the emotional complexity, the obsessive devotion, and the hope that even after years of pain, healing is still possible. It was impossible to put down, impossible not to root for, and impossible not to love.
This is, without question, one of my favorite reads of the year.
